What are the steps to get started?

1.) Contact to exchange organizations/Objectives:

The web offers a lot of information about exchange organizations all over the world. So, look for programs which you are interrested.
I can recommend to work with the Ohio State University which offers "The Ohio Program".

The Ohio Program is a foreign and domestic international student exchange. It provides opportunities for study and on-the-job training for specially selected foreign and American agricultural and horticultural students.

In addition to student experience, general objectives are to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries and to assist in the development of friendly, sympathetic and peaceful relations between the United states and other nations.

2.) Choose the country of your interest or Language skills

The most exchange organizations offers internships in all relevant countrys for horticulture, like England, Netherlands,New Zealand, Australia... . Your choose should depend on your language skills. You should have a basic knowledge of the countries language you choose. But don't be frightened, you will see how fast you learn if you are willing to communicate and if you are open to contact new people.

I can recommend participating on a language course just before the start of the program. Be patient and don't expect to learn the language in a couple months. But you can force the improvement if you go to parties and movies, read books and magazines( I started with comics). It is always better to look for a host, where you can stay, so you have social contact and the start in the new circumstances are much easier.

3.) Fill out the application!!

If you are at this point, please don't look back and say :"I will miss...and what will me expect...?" Don't be afraid!! You will collect experience in a short time you will never have in years if you stay at home. You will see a lot of new things and you will have fun!! If you are worried about your relationship, forget it, if your partner really likes you he or she will be there when you come home.

So now I hope there are no more reasons not to go!! Try to send the application at the beginning of the year, so your chances to get a scholarship are much
higher because the financial support decreases during the year. So start early enough with the preparations ( for example: passport,recommondations,resume...)
